Puente is an artist’s book by Alberto Pina and Andrés Barba, the sixth folder in collaboration of El cañón de Garibaldi publishing house. A bridge is a symbolic and political object, but also a familiar witness. The scenography of the Roque Gonzalez Bridge that crosses the Parana River between the cities of Posadas, Argentina and Encarnacion, Paraguay is the motif Alberto Pina uses to show -in a large silkscreen on Kraft paper- the implacable fragility of all human deals, the link between architecture, politics and commerce. Andrés Barba completes this version with a domestic view: that of a family whose life takes place in front of that bridge.
FIRST VISION
He thinks of other bridges
compares them
change their tensors
with a mental thumb.
Before – they say – the city was different.
How strange the contrast:
on one side the river, like a brown thigh
on the other, random,
the city without a center.
It would be exotic if Carmen
didn’t make it familiar:
the house, the room, the pool,
the cactus she planted as a child
with its pink flower on top.
He spends a few days there
as she did then
when the river ended there.
The camalotes come down slower
in life than in fiction
and he does not lose his fashionable look
despite the chipa.
One afternoon
inclined to caloric meditation
he thinks of other bridges
compares them
changes its tensors
with a mental thumb:
the first half poor
the other elegant,
here some simple piles
there two industrial tensors,
provincial and solemn at the same time
like the father rehearsing
a speech for the wedding
and it comes out pompous
and people laugh
but then, afterwards, in the memory
outlives him
and rescues him
as if it came from far away
from a world before the rivers
and the desire of crossing them
as if he were not talking about a bridge
but something else.
