I, The Other
I, The Other (Yo, el otro) is an artist’s book by Alberto Pina and Andrés Barba, fifth portfolio in collaboration of Cañón de Garibaldi ediciones. The writer is always other with respect to himself. In the way he devours himself, but also in the simple yearning to write, in the projected desire to become a writer. In this text, Andrés Barba conducts a séance that summons two ghosts: that of an elderly Henry James, who returns to New York after many years of absence and writes with his discomfort one of the most famous ghost stories in history, The Jolly Corner, and that of the writer himself in the early years of his training, during his stay in Maine and his trips to New York trying to locate the master’s house.
“When someone knows our identity, it becomes key for us. It is -in its multiple versions- the figure of the tutor, the father, the priest, the shaman, the therapist, the lover, the son. But also of all its emptied or negative versions: the enemy, the tyrant, the scorned, the bastard, and even the most negative of all: ourselves doing what we should not have done or finally doing what we lacked the courage to do. In short: everything that we are not capable of assuming, everything that is incapable of assuming us.”

Printed in red ink on Sunji paper of 140 x 75 cm. and 28 gr. in a print run of 50 copies, 5 author’s proofs and 1 b.a.t.
Three etchings: “Self-portrait”, “Thorns” and “Leaves” on zinc plates of 248 x 160 mm. and 224 x 130 mm. printed on Velin Arches White natural paper of 300 gr. in two inks red and green, in a print run of 20 copies, 2 author’s proofs and 1 b.a.t.
One copy of the book “Yo, el otro” hand-sewn, numbered and signed by the author.
